Description
Considering that the most common firefighting tool uses water, not enough firefighters are experts in hydraulics. We tend to work from the gut, starting with baseline pressures and adjusting with feedback from those at the other end of the attack or supply line. “More pressure!” comes the call, and the operator twists the governor knob.
But there’s a science behind the seat-of-the-pants adjustments. Every length of hose adds friction loss, robbing pressure as water fights its way to the nozzle. Every floor climbed costs roughly half a pound of pressure per foot of elevation. The nozzle itself demands a specific pressure to break the stream into the right pattern and reach. A skilled pump operator balances all of it at once, feeding enough to each line so crews on the other end get the water they need, when they need it. Get it right and the attack flows smoothly. Get it wrong and the whole operation can fail at the worst possible moment.
That’s the kind of pressure we like–high stakes, big payoff, and a sudden rush when everything breaks your way. This week we’re offering a full book of $20 $500 Blowout scratch-off tickets from the PA Lottery. It’s flush with chances to win $500, and when one hits, it’s a blowout in the best sense of the word.
